PROLOGUE |
Is AI the better choice? Fake news, fake facts, fake translations — what, if anything, can you trust these days? It is surprising how many clients place their faith in machine translations and AI-generated texts without considering the liability issues and reputational damage at stake. Or that their confidential information may end up in the public domain despite the contractual warranties of AI vendors. AI-generated translations are deceptive: they may read flawlessly at first glance, yet little does the reader realize that entire bits may be missing or “hallucinated”, i.e. fabricated out of thin air, the original meaning having been twisted beyond all recognition. Attempting to save money in this manner is not only short-sighted on account of the financial risk involved, it also borders on negligence. Experienced professional translators may not be able to compete on speed or price but they are superior when it comes to quality and accuracy. That is why they must be at the core of all translations of decision-critical importance. In the last analysis they own the translation, assume responsibility for it, something which AI solutions are unable to offer.
